Hello everyone! Yesterday I completed my first ever juice cleanse, courtesy of Uber Fresh and Yoga @ Cindy’s.
The timing couldn’t have been any more perfect, having felt a bit sluggish so far this summer with my days spent mostly on my butt, studying for quizzes and exams, and writing papers one after another for summer classes that I’m taking for graduate school. Needless to say, when I was informed that I won a one-day juice cleanse from Uber Fresh last week, I was ecstatic! Never in my life have I ever won anything, and I couldn’t have been happier that the winning prize included this. As a nutrition major, I am well-informed of juice cleanses and the benefits of juicing, and while I have always wanted to try a juice cleanse, I never got the chance to until now! Here was my experience, starting with the moment I woke up and everything I did yesterday. Enjoy!

6:20am I wake up and get ready for a Heated Vinyasa Flow class at Yoga @ Cindy’s. Speaking of Yoga @ Cindy’s, for those of you in the Bay Area (Santa Clara County), I HIGHLY recommend checking them out! They have two locations—one on Lawrence, and the other in Sunnyvale. All I have to say is that their classes are amazing! I’ve been to numerous yoga studios, including that of Bikram Yoga and yoga classes offered by the community center where I live, but no where beats Yoga at Cindy’s (no, I am not being told to say that)! I love the variety of instructors there, and how supportive, informative, welcoming and friendly they each are. Plus, the studio is always so clean, and their staff members at the front desk are always so welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Definitely recommend!
7 – 8am Heated Vinyasa Flow at Yoga at Cindy’s. Feeling invigorated and ready to take on the day!
8:57am I have my first juice—Green Detox. According to Uber Fresh’s website, they recommend starting the day with a green juice, so I choose this one. It’s… not bad but not amazing either. Ingredients: kale, apple, romaine, spinach, celery, cucumber, parsley, ginger, and lemon. First sip, I definitely taste the celery, which I am not very fond of, but strangely enough, the more I drink, the more bearable it is. That being said, the juice tastes very refreshing and light, which is nice!
9:45am STILL drinking the juice. If you know me in “real life” I drink so slow—just a habit of mine, and I love savoring everything I drink/eat! Already feeling full. It’s actually really filling!
11:40am hungry again! Time for second my juice…I choose Kick Starter. Ingredients: carrot, pineapple, apple, and lemon. Takes sip. Wow, YUM! What a pleasant surprise…sweet and tasty. The juice smells good too. Loving this and the colors!
1:03pm Yes, I am still drinking this. It’s because I am also taking sips of water as I am drinking the juice. Not sure if I am supposed to be doing that or not, but the juice is so rich/strong (delicious of course!) that I feel the need to rinse out my taste buds/clear my palate as I drink to help me finish it!
2:56pm Feeling hungry again! Time for juice #3. I choose Recharge. Ingredients: beet, carrot, apple, lemon, and ginger. It’s nice! Very refreshing and light… not too sweet and not bland either. I like it!
4:52pm Juice #4. Need to get something into my system before class! (Leaving in an hour). Since I’m a slow drinker, I figured I’d start now! Having Infinite Youth. Ingredients: pear, carrot, cucumber, and lemon. I can definitely taste the cucumber so if you are a cucumber fan, I’m sure you’d love this. This juice is also light, and tastes very refreshing as well. So far my favorite is still the Kick Starter.
Fast forward to 10:00pm…(had Green Energy during class). Last juice of the day – Almond Mylk. Before I even took a taste, I knew it would be amazing. And it IS! It smells like a Christmas…and like a cinnamon-y milkshake…it literally screams dessert! Ingredients: almond, dates, vanilla, cinnamon, and sea salt. The flavors of almond and cinnamon are so wonderfully prevalent, and I can also taste the sweetness from the dates and vanilla. YUM! This, my friends, is the best almond mylk EVER.

Overall Thoughts (My Experience):
It’s 10:30pm right now and I just completed the cleanse! I am feeling so invigorated and refreshed right now (although I should be going to bed soon, haha). I wasn’t that much of a fan of the green juices, but they were just what my body needed. As for as my overall experience of this cleanse, it really was not that difficult for me! After all, it was only a day, and each juice was filling and very satisfying. When I did get hungry, it was during my “normal” mealtimes, and not once did I feel like I was starving to the point where I felt like I was going to faint or pass out…just had the usual hungry feels that we all get when we are hungry!
The Downside (My Experience):
I was actually supposed to get this cleanse a day before on Monday, but the owner didn’t inform me until the morning before (12am) that they pressed the juices 6am-12pm, and did not deliver until 12-3pm. While it was great to hear that they literally make all of their juices fresh, it would have been nice if he had informed me sooner (I had emailed him a week before on a Wednesday!) It wasn’t a big deal of course, this was just my experience in regards to customer service…but anyway I am so thankful and grateful for having won this cleanse!
My thoughts on juicing…Is it right for you?
Yes and no.
No: If you’re looking for a quick way to lose weight, that should not be the reason to juice. Juicing is not about short-term weight loss. It’s about overall health and wellness. Yes, if you do 3-7 day cleanses, you are likely to lose weight. But is it sustainable? What’s going to happen after you get off the juice? You’re going to gain some weight back, obviously. But that’s not what you should be focusing on, nor the reason why to juice in the first place.
Yes: Juicing provides a plethora of nutrient-rich benefits and allows for a quick, efficient way to absorb tons of vitamins and minerals. It boosts your immune system, aids in digestion, and helps you remove toxins from your body. If you’re not a big fruit and veggie eater, juicing is a great way to get them in AND you’ll feel amazing doing it!
Where I stand
While a juice cleanse could feel like the first step towards a healthy lifestyle, I personally don’t see it as a solution for long-term health and wellness. Being healthy is a lifestyle. It’s not a diet. It’s not a phase. It’s a permanent lifestyle change.
