Ever in a rush in the morning but you don’t want to pass up on a good breakfast? I certainly don’t. The other day I was being spontaneous and decided to not make my usual bowl of oatmeal in the morning but make an oatmeal smoothie instead! It may sound a bit odd for those of you who have never tried an oatmeal smoothie before (this was my first time actually), but it turned out so amazing that I had to share!
This oatmeal smoothie is jam-packed with nutrients and health benefits! Plus, it’s filling and satisfying, and rich and creamy in texture. Super quick and easy to make on the go!
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 cup of your favorite milk (I used almond milk)
1/2 cup of oats
1 ripe banana, sliced
2 cups of ripe, sliced, frozen strawberries
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
In a blender, pour in the oats and ground or puree until a fine or powdery texture. Then, add in the milk, banana, and strawberries and blend until smooth. Enjoy!
Tips
- No milk in your fridge? No worries - fresh juice works perfectly amazing as well! If you decide to add juice, you may consider omitting the vanilla extract.
-Substituting the strawberries with another fruit (like peaches) can be just as delicious. Get creative!
Nutrition Spotlight: Strawberries
As I have learned in my Nutrient Metabolism class, strawberries are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, manganese, folate, and potassium. It is low in sodium, cholesterol, and saturated fat.
Dietary fiber: Dietary fiber, as found in fruits like strawberries, helps normalize bowel movements by decreasing the risk of constipation, and helps control blood sugar levels by reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an antioxidant and functions as an electron donor or reducing agent to protect the body from free radicals meaning vitamin C stimulates the activity of white blood cells in the immune system that helps us fight against foreign bodies and toxins in the body.
Folate: Folate plays a crucial role in the synthesis of DNA in the body.
Potassium: Potassium helps in building muscle, controlling electrical activity of the heart, and maintaining acid-base balance. High potassium intakes have been found to reduce the risk of stroke and lower blood pressure!
Enjoy and do let me know if you try this!! :)
